In between my voting....

...I don't have much to say tonight. I like Lee. I want him to win. I am voting for him.

Crystal showed initiative for the first time in at least a month.

Lee had some great song selections.

I am not a fan of the judges and how they mess with people. I have not like Kara all season (or last). Her only value to the show was showing up bikini girl last season.

I may just be done with this show.

I was fired up before it started, and then I was not. The show tonight made me very irritable - obviously ;)

Until a new reality show peaks my blogging interest....

Season 9, Theme Week 9 - And then there were three...

I have been fired up for this week since I watched too many myFOXchicago.com clips from Friday's hometown visits......yes, I did that.

Casey - OK, It's Alright With Me
I am not sure what I think. It wasn't fabulous, but it wasn't bad. I did not get the in it to win it vibe from him tonight.

Crystal - Come To My Window
Overdone song selection. Her vocal was solid and the arrangement was different enough. Her comments are making me wonder if she has the winning drive.

Lee - Simple Man
He's bringing the swagger. I can see why he picked the song, but the selection was just alright for me. Loved the vocal. ROCK ON.

Casey - Daughters
This performance was immensely stronger than the first. I don't think he is in the same league as the other two.

Crystal - Maybe I'm Amazed
Ok, she's trying more in this performance. I thought a couple of times she was yelling at me, but the performance was really good. (One thing that bugged me, and I confirmed with another fan.....she didn't change the lyric and was singing that she was a man.....it was weird.)

Lee - Hallelujah
W
O
W

I hate to say it, but Simon can play this game well.

It's 10:34 pm ET and I have voted about 25 times.

Can't wait to see Justin Bieber...oops I mean the finalist home visits tomorrow night.

Season 9, Theme Week 9 - Songs of the Cinema

Let's get right to it....

01 - Lee - Kiss from a Rose
Love the song selection. His look is slightly different tonight, but I am not sure about this wardrobe selection. The beginning was just ok, but I really liked the last third of the song. I still "heart" him.

02 - Michael - Will You Be There
He selected a good song. Solid performance, I liked it.

Duet 1 - Lee and Crystal - Falling Slowly
I have mixed thoughts on the song selection. I love the song, the duet was AWESOME. BUT...Kris just sang this song last year, so I was a little bummed. P.S. This was a great look for Lee. :)

03 - Casey - Here's to You, Mrs. Robinson
Interesting song selection. Who told him to wear that jacket? Bad camera work during the performance. Does he realize he has an audience, he was not really looking at anyone. Performance was dry, and I thought it was a safe vocal, but it was a cool arrangement.

04 - Crystal - I'm Alright
Bizarre selection, but I will give her credit for an original selection. I could do without the "backdrop" vocals. The vocal was good and the arrangement was original. I am not sure I would call it "current".

Duet 2 - Casey and Mike - Have You Ever Really Loved A Woman
Ok selection. It was ugly until Mike started his part. It got better but never great.

On to the semi-finals....hopefully minus the boy from Texas.

Season 9, Theme Week 8 - Songs of Sinatra

I'm pretty pumped for this week. Strong songbook and an actual mentor for the second week in a row.

(Apparently Harry, Ryan and Lee have the same wardrobe consultant.)

01 - Aaron - Fly Me To the Moon
Aaron, thank you for fixing your shirt sleeves. You stepped up to classic style tonight, and it works. One of his better weeks. (I feel like I am likely to yell at the judges this evening.....well, just Kara.)

02 - Casey - Blue Skies
He also stepped up his style (thank goodness). I am a big fan of the fact he is going without guitar this evening. Very cool performance - I feel like he is a different performer these last two weeks. He's bringing some game. (not that kind of game that he brought when he went shirtless in auditions)
(I obviously saw something different than the judges who are currently shredding him.)

03 - Crystal - Summer Winds
I personally don't care what the song means to her....if she won't tell us, then I am annoyed by the production staff (not her, the editors) in making a to-do about it. I am not a fan of her look tonight at all. Her vocal was strong, but there was no performance. I didn't like it overall.

04 - Mike - The Way You Look Tonight
I could do without the hat, but he knows how to pick songs he can perform to the fullest. This genre works well for him too. To quote Mr. Jackson, it's ON.

05 - Lee - That's Life
Lee, I am yelling at you because you need a slightly new look. I feel like you are not maximizing your wardrobe budget. I liked his song selection. Tight performance and solid vocal. I thought the band was a little too loud. He MUST win. I MUST start to vote. :)

This week, I feel like only Mike and Lee are safe. We shall see what "America" decides.

Does anyone want to start voting people off the show? Or capping the votes per phone line? Let's mix it up a little.

Season 9, Theme Week 7 - Songs of Shania

(Writer's note - I am sorry for the delay in this posting. I watched the show late (travesty) and didn't get my notes typed up last week. Also, I have fixed the Comments settings so everyone can post their thoughts .. Ross and Scott, that means you for sure.)

01 - Lee - You're Still the One
Not sure about his song selection, but it's good he chose a ballad. Loved the beginning, but it wasn't my favorite. Solid vocal and he did mix it up. Definitely around next week (or I might just stop watching all together). Also, I need to go on record that a hometown visit for Lee would be the closest hometown Idol visit. After the missed opportunities of David Cook and Danny Gokey, I will be Chicago bound.

02 - Mike - It Only Hurts When I'm Breathing
Wow. This doesn't sound country at all. I think he rocked it. He's for sure got the performance aspect down.

03 - Casey - Don't
Excellent selection for him. The staring into the camera was a little Constantine/Ace for me. He did step it way up this week.

04 - Crystal - No One Needs To
Good seelction. HATE the background vocal. Nice (just nice) job. Did not dig the wardrobe.

05 - Aaron - You Got A Way
Big song for him. It's his week with country. I thought it was solid. He did seem more confident this week.

06 - Siobhan - Any Man of Mine
Where do I even begin with that outfit? The walking around was distracting. I felt like she was trying to make it rock, and it didn't. For me, for her, it didn't work.

This is tough to call. The Shania songbook faired well this week.

My vote to leave is Siobhan.

Season 9, Theme Week 6 - Inspirational Tunes

For those of you who know me well, you know I love a good song to inspire, motivate, pump up.....we shall see how the "idols" fare.

01 - Casey - Don't Stop
I love the song selection. He TOTALLY stepped up the style this week (thank goodness). The vocal was tight. He's still a bit robotic from a performance perspective. Although we know he is committed (on the record) to playing guitar every week, I do think it would be interesting (aka create a potential moment) if he did put it away just once. I personally thought this was one of his better weeks.

02 - Lee - The Boxer
I'll admit that I don't really know this song, so I didn't jump out of my chair when I heard he was singing it. He (of course) has his trendy rock style going on. It was a solid vocal, and his performance was simple, but very cool. I do agree with the judges' comments about it being "current".

03 - Tim - Better Days
I am a big fan of the song choice. He needs to step up the wardrobe....very drab this week. The vocal was decent, and he was connected to the audience. All that being said, it is possible it is his week to go.

04 - Aaron - I Believe I Can Fly
Song selection is a little on the cheesy side. With respect to his wardrobe, he needs to try a different method with his shirt sleeves. I thought it was one of his stronger vocals. It was a good performance.

05 - Siobhan - When You Believe
Awesome selection based on the category. Her style is too funky for me, so I can't really comment other than that. Other than a few nasally spots, I thought her vocal ROCKED. She is much more on her game this week.

06 - Big Mike - Hero
I LOVE this song. I can't even count how many times I have listened to it since this Idol moment: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lz7LR3wbO_Y
He looked as if he was in dress rehearsal with his "wardrobe". He rocked the vocal and gave a solid performance. Overall, props for the selection because now, I'll listen to the Davids again a few more times.

07 - Crystal - People Get Ready
Solid song choice for her. She dressed up for the occasion which was a nice change of pace (the judges made a bigger deal about it than necessary, I just was glad she's mixing it up). By far, the best vocal of the night. I really liked the a cappella portion at the front.

So my bottom three are - Tim, Casey, Aaron - mainly because the other four are more talented.

As far as my random evaluation based on categories, here are my leaders:
Song selection - Mike
Wardrobe - Casey, Crystal
Vocal - Crystal
Performance - Lee, Crystal

Season 9, Theme Week 5 - Elvis Songbook

Remember in past seasons when seasoned (aka cosmetically revised) music professionals mentored the contestants? Let's revisit - Barry Manilow, Stevie Wonder, Kenny Rogers, Gladys Knight, Smokey Robinson, Randy Travis, and Dolly Parton.

This "season" our mentors have included Usher (10 yrs in the industry tops), Miley Cyrus (see prior blog ranting), and (I can barely say this) Adam Lambert....seriously....seriously...REALLY? Not that the dud can't perform, but MENTOR?

Let's research the definition of a mentor:
1.a wise and trusted counselor or teacher
2.an influential senior sponsor or supporter
Do we think this matches the folks this season?

And then I thought, how many people have they asked and they said no?

On to the Elvis category - we did try this in 2006. Not sure I am that fired up about this category. I am still not over the fact that Elvis week is what sent Daughtry home.

01 - Crystal
This was ok, nothing special. I am not a fan of the backdrop (background) singers. I just don't konw that I'd listen to her on the radio. She's got talent but I can't get fired up.

02 - Andrew
Not sure he could put this on an album BUT I liked that he mixed it up. One of his more dramatic performances. I am not sure if it was solid enough for him to stay.
(I hate Kara. I don't want her to talk anymore.)

03 - Tim
He sounded nervous at the beginning. I kinda like that he didn't listen to Adam's advice. Hee Hee. I liked the arrangement a LOT but not totally crazy about the vocal. He saved himself though for sure.

04 - Lee
Did he miss the words or start the song in a weird place? I didn't love it for some reason and that makes me a little sad. He looked distracted while he was singing it.

05 - Aaron
This was not a stellar song selection for him. It tends to be karaoke from the first note. He's dressed for the swagger, and his vocals were better this week. I feel like this show is wearing him down because he is so young.

06 - Siobhan
I feel like I am watching Elvis - The Musical. I so don't like this performance. What happened to Rock Star Siobhan?

07 - Big Mike
Wow. I loved that. I liked that it was original.

08 - Katie
She's a new performer in the past few weeks. Not necessarily a "current" performance, but the vocal was solid.

09 - Casey
It was cool. I want him to surprise us one week though with his performance.

I feel like the contestants are going through the motions this season.

P.S. Ryan is not so super this season.

Also, HOLLA to the Glee cast.
