Top 11, Elton John

And we are off....

01 - Scotty - Country Comfort
Not my favorite song selection for him, and I can't believe this is an Elton John song. I love the look, and I love this kid. His last note was awesome.

02 - Naima - I'm Still Standing
Not digging reggae Elton John. That's all I can say.

03 - Paul - Rocket Man
Excellent song selection. That darn suit again??? I was expecting way better...it was too safe.

04 - Pia - Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me
So cute again with the dress. This might be my favorite of hers. Wow, this girl brought the house down. She was more "into it" tonight. Top notch!

05 - Stefano - Tiny Dancer
Not the best selection for me for him (hee hee)
He performed better this week. Sometimes, it was hard to hear him. The style makeover worked well for him.

(Has anyone else noticed Ryan's hair looks less spiky this evening?)

06 - Lauren - Candle In The Wind
She looks great. I don't like what they did to the melody, but her vocal was solid.
I wish her mother would dress more appropriately. I keep thinking they are showing Lauren's younger sister.

07 - James - Saturday Night's Alright
I like this song. The performance was a bit manic for me. He's still in my Top 5, and he's fun to watch overall.

08 - Thia - Daniel
I must admit, I tune her out and multi-task while she is singing. It was nice and safe. She's not in it to win it.

09 - Casey - Your Song
Great song. He looks less like a grizzly bear this week. He sounded great. I liked this low key performance.

10 - Jacob - Sorry Seems To Be the Hardest Word
It was good. He is the dramatic singer this year. I am just not a fan.

11 - Haley - Benny and the Jets
Her dress is cute. I am having a 27 Dresses flashback with this song. I didn't hate it, but it's probably time for her to get cut.

Here's how I would personally rank the performances:
Pia
Scotty
Casey
James
Stefano
Lauren
Paul
Jacob
Thia
Haley
Naima

Top 11, Motown

I must make a pre-blog comment....I was really pumped for Motown night. As the show wore on though, I was a little distracted. Congrats to my friends Chris an Jill who had their first baby today (shout out to Baby Savannah!). I found myself not listening and checking facebook for pics and texting people. :)

Not to worry, I still have plenty of comments. And Grandma Betty watched the whole show today, and I have her pick of the week. "You know, I never really liked this type of music." Oh, Grandma, you just are waiting for Rat Pack week.

01 - Casey - Heard It Through The Grapevine
Solid 8/10 selection. Average outfit. I thought the vocal was decent, better than last week. The beginning was a little much for me. He's a little awkward when he walks around.

02 - Thia - Heat Wave
Solid selection again. She looks fantastic. Love the dress, love the shoes, love the jewelry. I like her much better this week. She is on an upswing.

03 - Jacob - You're All I Need
Like the selection. His look is very consistent. Strong vocal. I like him more subdued.

04 - Lauren - You Keep Me Hanging On
Strong song choice (9/10). LOVE her dress. Solid vocal, I dug it. This might be my favorite performance for her to date.

05 - Stefano - Hello
I love this song, but this is definitely more current Motown than some of the other songs. He rocked the Lionel Richie 80's look. I felt parts of his vocal were a little nasal. It was not my favorite performance of his, but he is still one of my favorites this season.

06 - Haley - You've Really Got A Hold On Me
Her song selection was just average. I was not a fan of her look this evening. Her vocal was better this week, but I think it's time for her to go home. Her performance was just ok for me. She isn't tour-worthy in my opinion.

07 - Scotty - For Once In My Life
Interesting song selection. Typical outfit, not anything too risky. Strong vocal. Sometimes his looks are a bit goofy when he sings. This kid cracks me up. And he has Grandma's early vote this season.

08 - Pia - All In Love Is Fair
Another interesting song selection. Her dress is gorgeous. I thought the vocal was a little bumpy at first, but then she brought the house down. She tends to stand in one spot, and she needs to mix it up. (I actually said "Thank you, J-Lo" out loud when she gave Pia feedback.)

09 - Paul - Tracks Of My Tears
Awesome Motown selection. What exactly happened to his hair? Decent vocal and solid performance, but he's not a favorite of mine. I think it is because I hear Rod Stewart when he sings, and I am not a big fan of his either.

10 - Naima - Dancing In The Streets
Average selection. I love her pants. Decent vocal, but I hated the dancing.

11 - James - Livin In The City
Love the song selection. Rocked the outfit. Vocal was inconsistent. Rocked the performance though.

Until next week....have a super week everyone!

Top 12, The Year They Were Born

(aka How old does Jenny feel?)

This is always an interesting week, so we'll have to see how this goes.

01 - Naima - What's Love Got To Do With It
Not sure about this selection. She's in the middle of the pack...it was average.

02 - Paul - I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues
Good selection. HIs voice is a little weak. The performance was a bit manic, but overall, nice work.

03 - Thia - Colors of the Wind
Is this really when she was born and was a I really a senior in college then? Ugh. Modern Pocahantas wardrobe was a good choice. Much better than last week, but it was just alright for me.

04 - James - I'll Be There For You
Excellent selection in general and for him. He killed it. He rocked it out with his style as well.

05 - Haley - I'm Your Baby Tonight
She sounds very karaoke. Not impressed still with her. Her lipstick was a mess.

06 - Stefano - If You Don't Know Me By Now
Good selection, somewhat safe (after the judges, what do I know?). I liked it. He nailed it and looked sharp as well.

07 - Pia - Where Do Broken Hearts Go
Her home video is hysterical. Not sure about her jumpsuit, but the jewelry makes up for it (sort of). The remix was odd, but her vocals were awesome.

08 - Scotty - Can I Trust You With My Heart
What amazes me about him is how completely laidback and comfortable he is performing on stage at 17. I didn't know the song, but it did work for him. Much better wardrobe for him this week as well.

09 - Karen - Love Will Lead You Back
Who "helps" her with her wardrobe. I was a huge Taylor Dayne fan, so I was happy. Her performance was boring and just ok for me.

10 - Casey - Smells Like Teen Spirit
When he was growly singing he sounded to me like Adam Sandler when Adam sings in movies. I liked the first half of his song better. This was a quirky week for him. I am not sold after this week.

11 - Lauren - I'm The Only One
Her mom dresses younger than she does. That's weird to me. This song my be a little old for her, but her vocal was much stronger this week.

12 - Jacob - Alone
Excellent song to select. The performance did not work for me.

So here is how I would group them
Top - Stefano, Pia, James, Scotty
Middle - Lauren, Paul, Jacob, Casey
Bottom - Karen, Haley, Thia, Naima

Have a great St. Patrick's Day!

Top 13, Who is your idol?

Since it is the first big week, I have reverted to my scoring methodology (1-10 scale on four items - style, song selection, performance, and vocal quality). I won't bore you with the breakdown, I'll just throw in the total.

01 - Lauren - Any Man of Mine - 31
Super cute outfit, shoes are questionable. Of all the Shania songs, she picks this one? She's a fun performer. I liked it, it was a nice opening to the show.

02 - Casey - With a Little Help From My Friends - 35
Goofy sense of style, but he is subdued this evening. Great song for him. Awesome performance - today was the first time I didn't think he was crazy. His vocal was pretty freaking great.

03 - Ashton - When You Tell Me That You Love Me - 29
She is very pretty and clearly channeling Diana this evening. The song was just alright for me. Her performance was solid but predictable.

04 - Paul - Come Pick Me Up - 29
He's quirky. The song was unfamiliar to me. It was cool, interesting, and unique.

05 - Pia - All By Myself - 31
I love her look, except for the train on her dress. Big song to pick. It was a lot of the same lyric. Her vocal is strong, and she could contend this season.

06 - James - Maybe I'm Amazed - 34
He's got his rocker thing going on. I didn't miss the tail. Awesome selection for him. I like him, I loved the arrangement and his vocal was solid. I'm a fan.

07 - Haley - Blue - 21
Love the dress, not a fan of the earrings. I have never liked this song. It was just ok and very predictable.

08 - Jacob - I Believe I Can Fly - 29
He's a sharp dresser. For him, the selection was good. He is comfortable on stage, I just haven't bought into it yet. He has a strong vocal.

09 - Thia - Smile - 27
What kind of shoes is she wearing? The selection was very predictable. I did like the "re-mix". It was solid, but not unique. She loses points with me because on stage she said, "...a lot more better."

10 - Stefano - Lately - 31
Cool sense of style. Love the song, love Stefano. The back mix was a littel much for me. Love him, the dude can sing.

11 - Karen - I Could Fall In Love - 23
Holy bracelets, Batman! A little TOO much sparkle for me. Predictable song choice. I liked it, didn't love it, thought it was very safe. Vocal was decent.

12 - Scotty - The River - 34
Dude, that is a bad shirt. LOVE the selection. I love him. He's unique for this group and looked very comfortable on stage. Loved the vocal. Awesome!

36 (???) - Naima - Umbrella - 29
Her outfit was an art project gone bad. The selection was questionable for me, for her. Did not like the "breakdown" or the dance moves. I did like her vocal.

So if I have to bucket them into three groups ... which of course I feel compelled to do ...

Top - Casey, Stefano, James, Scotty, Pia
Middle - Jacob, Lauren, Paul, Ashton, Naima
Bottom 3 - Karen, Thia, Haley

Until next week!

Top 13 (Results)

That results show almost caused me to have a panic attack.

I know, I know, it's just a TV show, but the singing for your life times six, the unknown of how many wild cards will be selected, and I even did the week count until the finale, but I was so nervous I did the math wrong, so I was still surprised with thirteen.

Ok, I am breathing again.

WOW.

Season 10, Top 12 Ladies

(I apologize for the posting delay....I'll try not to let it happen again.)

01 - Ta tynisa - Only Girl in the World
This is rough. I would not pick this song (and I do think I sound decent singing it in the confines of my Jeep). It seemed pitchy and got little better at the end. Her dress was cute and I loved her necklace, but that doesn't put you in the Top 5.

02 - Naima - Summertime
She's good. I like her back-story and she's eclectic. She nailed it and made the first person seem like a rookie (oh wait, they all are). Randy, you just ruined my day by saying "Fantasia".

03 - Kendra - Impossible
I am underwhelmed but I am not sure why. She did a nice job.

04 - Rachel - Criminal
Her drama was not dramatic, but cheesy. She's interesting. I like the unique style, but I am hesitant to say Top 5. She's got a little Melissa Ethridge in her vocal.

(I want J-Lo's earrings...they are so cool.)

05 - Karen - Hero
The dress is really pretty. I'm not sure about the song selection. She nailed the vocal! You can tell she is very talented, but I am curious to see if people picked up the phone for it. She's a Top 5 for me.

06 - Lauren T - Seven Day Fool
I don't know the song, but she sounds great. She can rock out too. I liked it a lot and am interested to see what she does with theme weeks.

07 - Ashthon - Love Over Me
I was fired up for her performance...then it started, and I was BORED.

08 - Julie - Breakaway
Love the selection. Love the dress. She sings in a different space than Kelly, but I liked it. She is a good performer.

09 - Haley - Fallin'
Solid vocal. Not sure I am her biggest fan though.

10 - Thia - Out Here On My Own
A capella open - bold and solid. Her dress is also so cute! Top 5 for sure. Awesome.

11 - Lauren A - Turn On the Radio
This is more age appropriate for her than Reba. She's a performer. Didn't do much different with the song, but I liked it a lot.

(Is Ryan trying to make himself taller with his new hairstyle?)

12 - Pia - I'll Stand By You
She made it her own.

Here is my Top 5:
Thia
Karen
Pia
Naima
Lauren A

Wild card - Lauren T or Rachel

I also like Julie and Ashthon.

Next week, I'll have much more to say on wardrobe and song selection. :)

Season 10, Top 12 Guys

It seems like it was just a few months ago that I was calling over (and over and over) to vote for Lee. Alas, it's a new season, new contestants, and the best part...NEW JUDGES!

To date, I haven't posted any thoughts on the new panel, but I am fired up for this group. Steven Tyler is hysterical...you don't quite know what he will say. (Thank goodness for the seven second delay.) Randy Jackson...the Dawg is back. Jennifer Lopez...I love her. So fun, so stylish, so NORMAL. I don't find myself rolling my eyes anymore because buh-bye Kara. Yippee!!!!!

This is a sign I watch this show in WAY too much detail....did anyone else notice that amidst the nine past winners who are highlighted in the opening song, the Idol committee has also added three prior game changers - Daughtry, Jennifer Hudson, and Adam Lambert. Something tells me, they weren't just trying to fill 12 spots instead of 9.

And now...our show....

Holy cow! 12 to 5 in one week! They are really making this happen. And we are already on the big stage!

Oh, Ryan just said wild card. Is he not telling us a number because they haven't decided that yet? Is it still the top 12? Oh the questions....

(I will note already that it's the first post and I am already overusing the ".")

Here's what I thought about the guys tonight:

01 - Clint - "Superstition"
Big song, fun kickoff. If I have to pick 5, he isn't one of them. It was a solid effort, but I am still struggling with the fact that this guy kicked a kid out of his group on group night.

02 - Jovany - "I'll Be"
He's a ballad guy. I like the song, but it has been done a LOT on this show. Side note - it took 13 whole minutes this season to be annoyed by the background vocals. He was great. He may make the list for me.

You go, J-Lo! I do wish she would have been around sooner!

03 - Jordan - "OMG"
Oh no. Not Usher this early. I don't like it (and I like Usher). I just sat and shook my head "no". Not top 5. He caved to the pressure. If it's not you, why did you sing it? You have one shot. He too, was a bit much during Hollywood week (as edited by "production".)

04 - Tim - "Streetcorner Symphony"
His timing is a little off, but this is a decent song selection. Walking back and forth is distracting a bit. He mixed it up like Randy's been asking for. I think he tried a little too hard. It bums me out because I do like him.

05 - Brett - "Light My Fire"
He confuses me. This song is a big song. He had a solid performance, but I am not quite sure I "get" him. Good kid, not the next "American Idol". (Did you hear Ryan say that instead of me? - Oh, I am loopy with a new season.)

06 - James - "Another Thing Comin'"
He's got his own style. He's pretty great. I like him a lot. He knocked it our and showed up everyone else so far. He's a little bit crazy, and I am not sure about the "tail", but I like him.

07 - Robbie - "Angel"
Interesting selection and mix. Challenging to follow James, but he held his own. I liked it. He took a risk tonight. He is young, and in some ways that showed.

08 - Scotty - "Letter from Home"
I really like him. I think he deserves a spot. He's way different than the other voices, and I am a little bit country these days. :) The selection did suit him very well.

09 - Stefano - "Just the Way You Are"
Safe selection. He's really great. The high note wasn't quite what it should be. But this kid deserves to be Top 5 guys. He's pop, and I like it.

10 - Paul - "Maggie Mae"
Does anyone else notice his teeth are very, very, very white? Interesting song selection, if he pulls it off. He is uniquely talented. It was solid, but not very original.

11 - Jacob - "A House Is Not a Home"
Not an original selection. Theatrical performance, but I am not sure he is America's next recording superstar (ie Carrie Underwood). He must have sounded better in the studio, or maybe it was the song for me.

12 - Casey - "I Put a Spell On You"
The biggest character closes out the show. This was yet another unique performance. He has his own energy level for sure. My verdict is still out on him.

Here's how I think it may go from a vote and my personal opinion perspective:

Top 5: Scotty, James, Stefano, Casey, Jacob, or maybe Tim.

I like Robbie and Jovany too, but not sure how it will go.

Until tomorrow!
