Season 9, Theme Week 6 - Inspirational Tunes

For those of you who know me well, you know I love a good song to inspire, motivate, pump up.....we shall see how the "idols" fare.

01 - Casey - Don't Stop
I love the song selection. He TOTALLY stepped up the style this week (thank goodness). The vocal was tight. He's still a bit robotic from a performance perspective. Although we know he is committed (on the record) to playing guitar every week, I do think it would be interesting (aka create a potential moment) if he did put it away just once. I personally thought this was one of his better weeks.

02 - Lee - The Boxer
I'll admit that I don't really know this song, so I didn't jump out of my chair when I heard he was singing it. He (of course) has his trendy rock style going on. It was a solid vocal, and his performance was simple, but very cool. I do agree with the judges' comments about it being "current".

03 - Tim - Better Days
I am a big fan of the song choice. He needs to step up the wardrobe....very drab this week. The vocal was decent, and he was connected to the audience. All that being said, it is possible it is his week to go.

04 - Aaron - I Believe I Can Fly
Song selection is a little on the cheesy side. With respect to his wardrobe, he needs to try a different method with his shirt sleeves. I thought it was one of his stronger vocals. It was a good performance.

05 - Siobhan - When You Believe
Awesome selection based on the category. Her style is too funky for me, so I can't really comment other than that. Other than a few nasally spots, I thought her vocal ROCKED. She is much more on her game this week.

06 - Big Mike - Hero
I LOVE this song. I can't even count how many times I have listened to it since this Idol moment: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lz7LR3wbO_Y
He looked as if he was in dress rehearsal with his "wardrobe". He rocked the vocal and gave a solid performance. Overall, props for the selection because now, I'll listen to the Davids again a few more times.

07 - Crystal - People Get Ready
Solid song choice for her. She dressed up for the occasion which was a nice change of pace (the judges made a bigger deal about it than necessary, I just was glad she's mixing it up). By far, the best vocal of the night. I really liked the a cappella portion at the front.

So my bottom three are - Tim, Casey, Aaron - mainly because the other four are more talented.

As far as my random evaluation based on categories, here are my leaders:
Song selection - Mike
Wardrobe - Casey, Crystal
Vocal - Crystal
Performance - Lee, Crystal

Season 9, Theme Week 5 - Elvis Songbook

Remember in past seasons when seasoned (aka cosmetically revised) music professionals mentored the contestants? Let's revisit - Barry Manilow, Stevie Wonder, Kenny Rogers, Gladys Knight, Smokey Robinson, Randy Travis, and Dolly Parton.

This "season" our mentors have included Usher (10 yrs in the industry tops), Miley Cyrus (see prior blog ranting), and (I can barely say this) Adam Lambert....seriously....seriously...REALLY? Not that the dud can't perform, but MENTOR?

Let's research the definition of a mentor:
1.a wise and trusted counselor or teacher
2.an influential senior sponsor or supporter
Do we think this matches the folks this season?

And then I thought, how many people have they asked and they said no?

On to the Elvis category - we did try this in 2006. Not sure I am that fired up about this category. I am still not over the fact that Elvis week is what sent Daughtry home.

01 - Crystal
This was ok, nothing special. I am not a fan of the backdrop (background) singers. I just don't konw that I'd listen to her on the radio. She's got talent but I can't get fired up.

02 - Andrew
Not sure he could put this on an album BUT I liked that he mixed it up. One of his more dramatic performances. I am not sure if it was solid enough for him to stay.
(I hate Kara. I don't want her to talk anymore.)

03 - Tim
He sounded nervous at the beginning. I kinda like that he didn't listen to Adam's advice. Hee Hee. I liked the arrangement a LOT but not totally crazy about the vocal. He saved himself though for sure.

04 - Lee
Did he miss the words or start the song in a weird place? I didn't love it for some reason and that makes me a little sad. He looked distracted while he was singing it.

05 - Aaron
This was not a stellar song selection for him. It tends to be karaoke from the first note. He's dressed for the swagger, and his vocals were better this week. I feel like this show is wearing him down because he is so young.

06 - Siobhan
I feel like I am watching Elvis - The Musical. I so don't like this performance. What happened to Rock Star Siobhan?

07 - Big Mike
Wow. I loved that. I liked that it was original.

08 - Katie
She's a new performer in the past few weeks. Not necessarily a "current" performance, but the vocal was solid.

09 - Casey
It was cool. I want him to surprise us one week though with his performance.

I feel like the contestants are going through the motions this season.

P.S. Ryan is not so super this season.

Also, HOLLA to the Glee cast.

Season 9, Theme Week 4 - Lennon McCartney Songbook

This week has the potential to be great with the "songbook" they have.

01 - Aaron - The Long and Winding Road
He now rolls his sleeves up every week. He seems to be struggling....not a good night, my friend. Although only 16 he is. ;)

02 - Katie - Let It Be
This is my favorite Katie performance. She sounded great. Very good!

03 - Andrew - Can't Buy Me Love
Big hair this week. I like this arrangement. Solid.

04 - Michael - Eleanor Rigby
Beatles inspired wardrobe. I am having trouble with this because all I hear in my head is David Cook's version. Not sure, Big Mike.

05 - Crystal - Come Together
Excellent selection. For some reason, it wasn't my favorite Crystal vocal.

06 - Tim - All My Lovin'
I must admit, I still want to high five Tim for putting Kara in her place on last week's results show. Dude, I need you to cut your hair, not use a flat iron on it. It was an excellent song selection and a solid vocal this week.
(Oh, Kara, are you backpedaling a little this week?)

07 - Casey - Jealous Guy
Tight performance. I dug it.

08 - Siobhan - Across the Universe
For me, for her, I felt the vocal was a little nasally in her lower register. (I can't believe I just typed that sentence....I have been watching this show too long.) I was just ok for me.

09 - Lee - Hey Jude
I really liked it. Not as fabulous as last week, but he seems to be bringing more swagger to the stage.

I am perplexed (and maybe still a little empty from the Bulldog loss), so I don't think I can pick a bottom 3 this week.

(Author note - Since I am posting after the results, I was pleased with the use of the Judges' Save for two reasons. One, it was not time for Mike to leave. Two, we don't have to have the drama anymore this season.)

Season 9, Theme Week 3 - R&B/Soul

I would like to start this week with two items:
- Shout out to the newest Idol fan. Welcome to the family, Baby Sofia! Congratulations to your proud new Idol-watching parents, Mike and Lisette.
- I heart Usher. Needless to say, I am pumped for this week's theme and mentor. (P.S. for those of you who do not already know, my mom is also a big Usher fan. If you ever hear a beige Malibu rocking out to "Yeah!", it's likely my mom.)

Ok, back to business. The judges are weird and not funny with their opening stupid crap and cheesy walking into the studio.

I still heart Usher.

01 - Siobhan - Through the Fire
I was a little bored. Solid vocal but the showmanship was a little dry. (Wow, the judges are beating her up.)

02 - Casey - Hold On, I'm Coming
Busting out a jacket this week.....nice work! Excellent selection. Strong vocal. Rockin' it.

03 - Mike - I Am Ready for Love
Obscure selection, Big Mike! His vocal was tight. Weird locale for the performance, it was a bit dramatic. Overall, props to Mike.

04 - Didi - What Becomes of the Broken Hearted
Interesting selection. Interesting gown. I liked the performance, but I didn't love it.

05 - Teflon Tim - Sweet Love
Lovin' the outfit this week. Lovin' the out of the box song selection as well. Oh, the drama stairs. They don't really help anyone. Ok, I liked this. He is trying out the crooner vibe this week. (Kara, he is laughing at you because you are such a witch.)

06 - Andrew - Forever
Super cool! Solid game on the vocal. If the judges talk about a moment or the Paula song, I will erupt in expletives. This is why Andrew is in the Top Ten.

07 - Katie - Chain of Fools
What exactly is she wearing? (OK, maybe the wardrobe wasn't so bad) I liked it. She brought it.

08 - Lee - Treat Her Like a Lady
LOVED everything about that.

09 - Crystal - Midnight Train to Georgia
She can pull those shoes off if she sits at the piano the whole time. She is braver than I will ever be with those. I feel like playing the piano is making her stare at it and so that was a little rough, but overall it was a great performance.

10 - Aaron - Ain't No Sunshine
Not sure about the hairstyle. Did anyone else hear Simon talking while he was singing? This is tough because Kris slayed this song last season. I like this kid, and this was a good performance.

So, here's what I thought in summary:
Lee rocked it out.
Andrew and Casey made very wise song selections.
Crystal sounded great.
Didi and Tim are on the bubble.

Until next week.....

Season 9, Theme Week 2 - Miley Cyrus is a "mentor" (ugh)

I'll admit that the prospect of Teen Idols week sounded quite fun. Somehow, it was switched to Billboard #1's. Could they not get songs cleared? What's up with the switch? Also, I'll just say it now...and try not to say it again - Miley Cyrus is not a musical mentor.

I must say that the beginning of the show judge banter is not a favorite, but it served two nice purposes this evening. One, Simon was able to completely call Kara out on last year's stupid Idol anthem. Two, Grandma Betty was able to get upstairs to her room and not miss the first singer.

On to the "talent"

01 - Lee - The Letter
The performance dynamic is still not completely there. Rumor has it that not only does Lee play the guitar, he plays the piano. Maybe that's what he needs to create the "moment" Simon is looking for. Loved the selection - solid vocal. The nerves weren't there tonight. Simon, we know his recording artist style. Just listen to last week's selection from iTunes (of course I have it).

02 - Paige - Against All Odds
A Scott Savol favorite for song selection. You can tell her voice is not back to full strength with the soft parts of this song. It had a lot of rough parts for sure. She looks good from a style perspective. Kara was a little bitchy to her and way harsh. But Paige is admitting to America she should go home.

03 - Tim - Crazy Little Thing Called Love
Who let him buy that jacket? Liked the stage slide....oh no, he went into the pit. I am having trouble taking him seriously with this song selection and wardrobe selection. It was a bit awkward, my friend. Kara, on Idol, these guys can reach out into the audience....it's THEIR stage.

04 - Aaron - I Don't Wanna Miss a Thing
Dramatic lighting...BIG song. I like the country vibe with this song. Solid, Aaron.

05 - Crystal - Me and Bobby McGhee
Her performance was great but I didn't love the song selection because she sang the same repetitive lyric.

06 - Mike - When a Man Loves a Woman
LOVED IT! Kara should be smacked. May I?

07 - Andrew - Heard It Through the Grapevine
Like the song, but the performance was a little cheesy. He walked back and forth a lot. I was distracted from the decent vocal by the weird performance. Kara, let the Paula song go. He can't sing it again or you will trash him.

08 - Katie - Big Girls Don't Cry
Love her song selection! This girl is bringing it this week. She's top ten after this performance. This is the best I have heard from her.

Does anyone else think Miley doesn't add any value? And the mentors show up after at least five days of rehearsal, so can they really switch it up that much?

09 - Casey - The Power of Love
SUPER selection! Other than the bad shirt, he ROCKED! Rock the stage, dude! I also like that he is tall enough that he looks over the top of Ryan's head into the crowd.

10 - Didi - You're No Good
I like this song selection for her. Also, her dress is missing a sleeve.

11 - Siobhan - Superstition
The glasses....really? The dramatic stairs need to be turned off this season. I like the selection, but I don't like the punk rock hairstyle. Not her best overall performance - and then she screamed again. Crystal out sang you, my friend.

Based on my own items to rank...here are my top picks by category:
Personal style - Mike and Aaron
Song selection - Casey and Mike
Vocal skills - Casey and Crystal
Performance factor - Casey and Crystal

Here's how I would rank them (into buckets) after last night:
Top - Casey, Crystal, Mike
Middle - Lee, Siobhan, Aaron, Didi, Katie
Bottom - Andrew, Tim, Paige

Season 9, Theme Week 1 - The Rolling Stones on The American Idol

It's a big stage, boys and girls. Game on! (...that and they got to work with a stylist...woo hoo!)

As the real season begins, I will be judging the contestants on style, song selection, vocal, and performance.

01 - Big Mike - Miss You
His shirt does nothing for him. It's about two sizes too small. His singing stance was awkward. I liked the selection. I liked the vocal.

02 - Didi - Play With Fire
She was a little too attentive to the cameras at first. She has way too many accessories. She's bringing it vocally.

03 - Casey - It's All Over Now
His story is pretty cool. He needs to mix it up a bit with his attire. What did he do to his hair besides get it cut? He's bringing the rock star vibe tonight. He's showing a lot more personality than before.

04 - Lacey - Ruby Tuesday
Does she know she has two shirts on? She's "making it her own". I do like that. She's getting it done and sticking to her style - decent vocal.

(Kara, even though you hear Simon's every word, we haven't, so don't agree with "the guys" unless you are referring to Ellen as a guy.)

(The cute parents for each person are killing me.)

05 - Andrew - Gimme Shelter
He's prepped it up. This guy deserves his top 12 spot. Awesome performance. (I didn't hear the pitchy. Shut up, Kara.)

06 - Katie - Wild Horses
Her dress is not flattering on TV. Bizarre lighting. Her vocal gets stronger mid-song. The girl can sing. They need to not go the "sing your age" route with her tonight.

07 - Tim - Under My Thumb
Holy 10 kids! Thank you, stylists, for helping out his hair style. Wardrobe made him a bit more trendy as well. He is a different kid the past two weeks. I liked it. (His vocals came through on TV.(

(I don't know many of these songs, so I can't relate them back to the original...Don't roll your eyes at me, I just don't know them....)

08 - Siobhan - Paint It Black
Hair - bad. Footwear - horrid. Beginning of the song - off. Vocal - amazing. Performance - blah. Scream at the end - painful. If she wasn't such a great vocalist, I'd not love it.
(Kara - Adam? Really? Are you trying to piss me off?)

09 - Lee - Beast of Burden
Stylists have done a nice job with the guys this week - WOW! Low key style like the John Mayer sound version of the Rolling Stones. A bit safe from a selection perspective. I dig it. He's still working on the swagger, but he is younger than Daughtry and Cook were on this show.
(I made mean faces at Ellen.)

10 - Paige - Honky Tonk Woman
She's a very nice person. She looks great this week. At times the performance was awkward but this was her best vocal that I have heard. She was sick this week, and you really couldn't tell.

11 - Aaron - Angie
The stylist is Aaron's friend. He's dressed for the big stage. Rough beginning...not a stellar selection - I'm a little worried for my friend Aaron.
(Maybe I don't know enough about the song to understand what he did.)

12 - Crystal - You Can't Always Get What You Want
She wins the song selection game this week. Will she ever wear a color? It was solid vocals.

Tough to stay who is getting the boot this week.

Here are my top choices:
Style - Lee
Song selection - Crystal
Vocal - Siobhan and Lee
Performance - Casey

Top 8 Guys

Lee - Fireflies
Love the selection. Love him. Rocked it!

Alex - Trouble
Great selection. I can't figure him out. He's got a decent voice.

Tim - Hallelujah
His best so far. Not sure about him being able to go the distance, but he showed why he's there.
(Kara - he was at home a few weeks ago...they all were)

Andrew - Genie In A Bottle
I like him a lot and he's on it tonight! Yay!

Casey - You'll Think of Me
Love this song. Not sure I like how choppy he is singing it. He's got the talent to continue.
(He seemed nervous but who wouldn't be with the Kara weirdness.)

Aaron - I'm Already There
Rough start, but he nailed it as the song got bigger. Thank you, Simon.

Todrick - Somebody to Love
No No No. His best selection, but he can go home now.

(Can we kick Kara off the show?)

Michael - This Woman's Work
Wow! That was risky and he worked it out. (channeling Randy Jackson for a moment)

I want 7 guys and 5 girls in the top 12....stupid Idol.
